Tattoo Numbing Cream
What is Numbastay Tattoo Numbing Cream?
Numbastay Tattoo Numbing Cream is a topical numbing cream designed to help reduce discomfort during tattoo sessions. It is pharmacist formulated in Australia and created specifically for tattoo procedures.
Our cream is compounded in-house by a pharmacist and developed alongside tattoo artists to create a product that delivers strong numbing performance while still giving artists a better surface to work with.
How does tattoo numbing cream work?
Tattoo numbing cream works by temporarily blocking pain signals from the skin’s nerve endings. When applied correctly, it helps reduce the sharp pain sensation during tattooing, although you may still feel pressure or movement.
Numbastay uses a combination of short-acting and longer-acting local anaesthetics to help create a more sustained anaesthetic response across the tattoo session.
What active ingredients are in Numbastay tattoo numbing cream, and how does it work?
Numbastay tattoo numbing cream contains:
- 3% lidocaine
- 3% prilocaine
- 4% tetracaine
This combination of active ingredients is designed to provide both fast-acting and longer-lasting numbing support. Lidocaine and prilocaine help numb the surface nerves, while tetracaine is a powerful local anaesthetic known for its strong nerve-blocking effect.
Using this particular balance of short and long acting agents allows for a sustained anaesthetic response, helping make longer tattoo sessions more manageable.
Numbastay is commonly used for tattoos, but may also be suitable for other skin-based procedures such as piercings and selected cosmetic treatments.
Does Numbastay contain epinephrine?
No. Numbastay does not contain epinephrine.
Some numbing creams use epinephrine as a vasoconstrictor to reduce bleeding. However, this can tighten the skin and make it harder for tattoo artists to work, which may affect how the tattoo process feels and how the work settles once healed.
We do not use epinephrine because we do not believe it is necessary. Instead, Numbastay uses a softening base cream designed to help keep the skin soft and provide a better canvas for the artist to work on.
How long does Numbastay numbing cream last?
When applied correctly, numbing usually begins within 30 to 60 minutes, with peak numbness commonly lasting around 2 to 4 hours.
In many cases, our cream can provide an anaesthetic effect for up to 4 hours, and sometimes longer, depending on the individual, skin type, placement, and application method.
How do I apply Numbastay before a tattoo?
- Clean the area and dry thoroughly.
- Apply a thick layer of cream and do not rub it in.
- Cover the area tightly with cling wrap.
- Leave it on for 60–90 minutes.
- Remove the wrap and wipe off excess just before tattooing, or as your artist directs.
Tip: Always let your tattoo artist know you have applied numbing cream before your session starts.
Does numbing cream affect tattoo quality?
When used correctly and timed well, numbing cream should not negatively impact tattoo results.
One of the concerns some artists have with certain numbing products is the use of epinephrine, which can tighten the skin and make tattooing more difficult. Because Numbastay does not use epinephrine and instead uses a softening base, we have had no issues reported with our cream affecting artists’ results.
We have received strong feedback from tattoo artists and clients about how effective the cream is, while still allowing the skin to remain workable during the session.
Is tattoo numbing cream safe?
Topical numbing creams are generally safe when used as directed. Do not use on broken skin, do not over-apply, and avoid use if you are allergic to topical anaesthetics.
If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, have a medical condition, or have concerns about topical anaesthetics, speak with a healthcare professional before use.
Can I use numbing cream during a tattoo session?
This depends on the studio and the tattoo artist. Some artists may allow additional numbing products during longer sessions, while others may prefer not to. Always follow your artist’s guidance.

Tattoo Aftercare
What is the tattoo healing timeline?
Most tattoos heal in stages: days 1–3 redness and tenderness, days 3–7 peeling begins, days 7–14 itching and ongoing repair, and weeks 3–4 the surface looks more settled. Full healing can take 4–6 weeks depending on your skin and aftercare routine.
How should I clean my new tattoo?
Wash your hands first, then gently cleanse the tattoo with lukewarm water and a gentle cleanser. Pat dry with a clean towel or paper towel — do not rub — then apply a thin layer of aftercare as advised by your artist.
When should I use Ink Butter?
Ink Butter is ideal during early healing and the peeling phase to help reduce dryness and itchiness while supporting the skin barrier. Apply a thin layer to clean, dry skin as needed.
When should I use Ink Oil?
Ink Oil is best used once peeling has largely subsided and the tattoo is entering later-stage healing or fully healed maintenance. It helps keep the skin conditioned and tattoos looking vibrant.
What should I avoid after getting a tattoo?
Avoid swimming, saunas, direct sun exposure, heavy sweating, tight friction, and picking or scratching during healing. Always follow your tattoo artist’s aftercare instructions closely.
