Tattoo Numbing Cream vs Tattoo Aftercare
Tattoo numbing cream and tattoo aftercare are different products with different jobs. Numbing cream is a topical anaesthetic considered as part of preparation for a procedure. Aftercare products belong in the care routine discussed with your artist afterwards.
They are not interchangeable. Do not use a pre-tattoo numbing cream on a fresh tattoo simply because the skin feels sore. Check the directions for each product and agree on an aftercare plan with your studio.
What tattoo numbing cream is for
A topical anaesthetic acts on sensation in the area where it is applied. It does not clean the tattoo, serve as a moisturiser or replace the artist’s instructions for looking after the skin.
Our tattoo numbing cream guide explains the broader preparation conversation. The Numbastay product page provides product information to discuss with your artist and pharmacist.
What tattoo aftercare is for
Aftercare is the routine you follow once the tattooing is finished. Your artist should explain how to manage any dressing, when to begin cleaning and which products to use at each stage.
Write those instructions down or ask for a copy. A routine is much easier to follow when you know what comes first and which steps apply to you.
The Numbastay range includes Ink Wash, Ink Butter and Ink Oil. Get familiar with each product’s directions and ask your artist when, or whether, it belongs in your routine. Owning several products does not mean you should apply all of them immediately after the appointment.
Compare products by their role
The word “cream” can refer to very different formulations. Check the label rather than the texture or packaging.
| Product type | Main role | Question to resolve |
|---|---|---|
| Tattoo numbing cream | Temporary reduction of sensation | Is it suitable for me and accepted by my artist? |
| Tattoo wash | Cleaning within an aftercare routine | When should cleaning begin with my dressing? |
| Aftercare butter or moisturiser | Skin care according to its directions | When is this product appropriate for my tattoo? |
| Aftercare oil | Skin care according to its directions | At what stage does my artist recommend it? |
No single product label should be used as instructions for the whole routine. Each step has its own purpose and timing.
Plan before you leave the studio
Ask your artist to walk you through the first care steps for your tattoo. Useful questions include:
- How long should this dressing stay on?
- When should I start cleaning the area?
- Which product should I use, and how should I use it?
- Who should I contact if something does not look or feel right?
You can take a photograph of the products you already own and show it to the artist. That is easier than trying to remember whether the bottle at home is a wash, an oil or a numbing product.

Keep prep separate from aftercare
Store products so their labels are easy to read. Before applying anything, check its name, purpose and directions. This is particularly useful when several products share a similar black jar or bottle.
If a fresh tattoo feels unexpectedly painful or you are worried about the skin, ask for professional advice rather than covering up the symptoms with a numbing product. A care question and a medicine question may need different people to answer them.
Frequently asked questions
Can numbing cream replace tattoo aftercare
No. Its purpose is temporary numbing. Your tattoo still needs the care routine provided by your artist.
Can I apply numbing cream after getting tattooed
Do not assume a product intended for intact skin before tattooing is suitable for a fresh tattoo. Check with a pharmacist or doctor rather than improvising an application.
Do I need every aftercare product straight away
Follow the plan for your tattoo. Ask your artist which products are appropriate and when to introduce them.
Should I bring my products to the appointment
Bring the labels, or clear photographs of them, if you want advice on where they fit. This helps the conversation stay specific.
Know what each product does
